If you’re trying to save money on
your grocery bill, there are some foods you should just forget. Here are a few Reader’s Digest suggests we
cross off our list because they’re just too doggone expensive:
- You know those “Gourmet” frozen vegetables? Just add your own butter and herbs to plain
veggies.
- Premium frozen fruit bars-These can cost around $2 per bar. Why overpay for something that’s, again, easy
to make at home and cheaper. You can
pick up some reusable popsicle molds at a dollar store, or use small paper
cups. Buy exotic fruits, like kiwi and
mangoes when they go on sale, whip them up in a blender with some sweetener, a
little lime juice and water, then freeze.
- Forget those boxed rice “entrée” or side-dish mixes. You’re paying way more for rice, salt and
spices than if you just add the salt and spices to plain bagged rice at home.
- Powdered ice tea mixes and prepared flavored teas are a rip
off. Buy some inexpensive tea bags. You can get a box of 100 for just a few
bucks. Brew and keep in a jug in the
fridge. To flavor, add some fruit
juice.
Any perceived convenience for
these products is just not worth the extra money. Next week, how to make your own cheese! Just kidding…although you can do it, cheese
from the store is a convenience worth paying for!
